At Springwood, pupils have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which identifies and meets the individualised needs of the pupils. Learning is differentiated and is designed to be taught through access to a wide range of themes, an overview of which is available to view by clicking on the Curriculum Themes button below.
In addition to incorporating the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum Programmes of Study, at Springwood we recognise the importance of developing the pupils’ life skills in order to prepare them for the next stage in their learning and for their life beyond school. Therefore, the following areas are recognised as Core Aspects of Learning that form the foundation of the curriculum for teaching and learning at Springwood:

– Sensory Development
– Cognition and Learning
These Core Aspects of Learning form the basis of the Springwood Teaching Framework, which is used to plan personalised programs of teaching and learning, based on targets set from the pupils EHCP outcomes. The approach to learning is organised into pathways, which enables us to use the most appropriate teaching strategies and content suited to the learning needs of the pupils in each pathway.
Parents have the right to withdraw their children from R.E. and should, in the first instance, speak to the class teacher.

Phonics teaching follows the DfE validated Systematic Synthetics Phonics Scheme Phonics Shed. It encourages the development of the fundamental skills and phonemic awareness needed for progression in reading and writing in English. Phonics Shed also aims to foster a love of reading and writing through its strong, character-based narratives and engaging, multi-sensory activities. More information can be found here:
Pupils are encouraged to develop a love of reading and have plenty of opportunities to take part in shared reading sessions, storytelling sessions and individual reading sessions. Pupils have access to a range of reading material including books from the school library, adapted books, story sacks and bag books. Where appropriate, pupils take reading books home to share with parents/carers. Reading materials include reading for pleasure and information books as well as books for developing phonological awareness, which are linked to the school’s chosen Phonics Scheme. Pupils access Guided Reading sessions as appropriate.

More bespoke remote learning activities are devised by the class teacher in collaboration with parents and carers to meet the needs and circumstances of individuals should the need arise to ensure meaningful learning can continue.
