Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Statement

At Springwood the pupils have access to a broad, balanced, differentiated and creative curriculum. Our curriculum is designed to be taught through a wide range of themes, all of which are available to view below. We ensure the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Pupils have access to a theme based approach to learning with the use of ICT and technology to support and enhance communication, skills and cross curricular opportunities. The school follows a personalised approach focusing on communication, independence and social interaction. Pupils have access to a range of activities and facilities such as hydrotherapy / swimming pool, rebound therapy, music (taught by our music specialist), educational visits, food technology, outdoor learning, Forest Schools, yoga, rugby and dance. A multi-agency approach from a range of therapists enhances the holistic approach to learning and ensures that learning is maximised. If you would like any further information about the curriculum content and themes that your child is learning, please contact their class teacher.

Phonics and Reading

Our pupils have access to a wide range of reading materials, some of which is adapted to suit their needs. We use a range of reading books, schemes and big books to encourage pupils to enjoy books. Pupils will also experience a range of phonics approaches including ‘Letters and Sounds’ and ‘Jolly Phonics’.

All pupils will have:

• Individual Education Plans using small steps to learning

• Individual workbooks, recording evidence of key work/progress

• Recording of progress through the use of Extended P Scales or WS P Steps.

Pupils themselves are encouraged to evaluate their own performance and achievements of their personalised targets. Parents and carers are of course kept informed and we welcome their involvement in their child’s learning.
